  • Indonesia Intends to Ease Bureaucracy Further to Attract Investments

    It was reported in Investor Daily on Monday (03/03) that the Indonesian government intends to cut back some of the country's notorious bureaucracy regarding investment permits, thus speeding up the process for permit applications. Economic Minister Hatta Rajasa stated that, although Indonesia already has had significant success in reducing bureaucracy in recent years, investors are still put off by the lengthy application process. This is a particular problem in the country's oil and gas sector.

  • Indonesia's Preparations Start ASEAN Economic Community 78% Completed

    Economic Minister Hatta Rajasa said that Indonesia's preparations for the implementation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in late 2015 are currently for 78 percent completed. The AEC aims to enhance regional economic integration among the ASEAN member states. It will transform the ASEAN region into one with free movement of goods, services, investment, and skilled labour, as well as a freer flow of capital. Most important is to develop Indonesia's infrastructure in order to foster connectivity, thus reducing logistics costs.

  • Two Indonesian State-Owned Plantation Companies May Conduct IPO in 2014

    Indonesia's Coordinating Economic Minister Hatta Rajasa announced that the Indonesian government approved plans for the initial public offerings (IPOs) of two state-owned plantation companies: Perkebunan Nusantara V and Perkebunan Nusantara VII. The former is engaged in the plantation and production of palm oil as well as rubber, while the latter is engaged in the cultivation and plantation of rubber, oil palm, sugar cane, and tea products. Before the IPO, the government will establish a holding company for the plantation companies first.

  • Government Tones Down Indonesia's Export Ban Unprocessed Minerals

    Only about one hour before the controversial new Mining Law No.4/2009 would take effect on early Sunday morning (12/01), President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono signed a regulation that eases the impact of the new law. The aim of Mining Law No.4/2009 is to ban the export of certain unprocessed minerals (including concentrates) but the new regulation that was signed on Saturday evening (11/01) stipulates that concentrates can still be exported for the next three years, while exports of ore are prohibited since Sunday morning.

    The government of Indonesia announced on Tuesday (24/12) that increased levels of foreign direct investments will be allowed in the country’s airports, pharmaceutical industries, power plants, and toll roads. The revision of Indonesia's Negative Investment List (Daftar Negatif Investasi), the list which stipulates which sectors are closed (or partly closed) to foreign investment, is conducted in order to attract more foreign investments from abroad as a means to combat slowing economic growth in Southeast Asia's largest economy.

  • Indonesia's MP3EI Masterplan Received IDR 647.46 Trillion in Investments

    The total value of investments in the Masterplan for Acceleration and Expansion of Indonesia's Economic Development (MP3EI) between 2011 - when the Masterplan was first introduced - and July 2013 amounted to IDR 647.46 trillion (USD $58.86 billion). Coordinating Economic Minister Hatta Rajasa said this to state-owned news agency Antara. State-owned enterprises invested a total of IDR 173.63 trillion, followed by the private sector with IDR 231.88 trillion, the government with IDR 99 trillion and public-private partnerships with IDR 143.12 trillion.

Hidayat and Economic minister Hatta Rajasa confirmed that on Friday (21/06) the government will announce the increase in price of subsidized fuel after it had already been approved by the House of Representatives (DPR) last Monday (17/06). Immediately after the announcement, the price of fuel is set to be raised.     Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Hatta Rajasa said that the rupiah exchange rate's new equilibrium is at IDR 11,000 per US dollar. As the economic fundamentals of Indonesia's economy have improved in recent months - evidenced by the easing current account deficit and inflation - the rupiah has shown a strong performance, appreciating around six percent against the US dollar in 2014 (year to date).
