Indonesia Presidential Election 2014: What do the Recent Surveys Say?
A survey conducted by Pusat Data Bersatu (PDB) shows that the Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo-Jusuf Kalla pair enjoys more popularity than the Prabowo Subianto-Hatta Rajasa pair. Both teams compete to be elected as Indonesia’s new president and vice president by the people (on 9 July 2014). The result of the survey, which was conducted in seven cities, indicates that, if the election would be held today, Joko Widodo-Jusuf Kalla can rely on 32.2 percent of the vote, whereas the Prabowo Subianto-Hatta Rajasa team received 26.5 percent of the vote.
Subianto-Rajasa enjoy large support in the cities of Medan (North Sumatra) and Bandung (West Java), while Widodo-Kalla are superior in Balikpapan (East Kalimantan), Makassar (South Sulawesi) and Semarang (Central Java). Senior PDB analyst Agus Herta said that it is interesting to note that other big Indonesian cities, such as Jakarta and Surabaya (both on Indonesia’s most populous island of Java), support is mixed thus neither team has a dominating position.
The survey was conducted between 26 May and 1 June 2014 (meaning that the first debate between both teams which was held and broadcast live on national television on 9 June 2014 did not have an impact on the results) using 2,688 respondents in seven major Indonesian cities.
Meanwhile, Executive Director at Cyrus Network Hasan Nasbi stated that the Subianto-Rajasa team will have difficulty winning the race as the company's latest survey indicates that Widodo-Kalla secured 53.6 percent of the vote, whereas their competitors only received 41.1 percent. This survey was conducted between 25 and 31 May 2014 with 1500 respondents in 300 villages across 33 Indonesian provinces (2.6 percent margin of error)
