On 29 August 2025, the benchmark stock index of Indonesia was in deep red territory (after having touched an all-time record high position a day earlier), while the rupiah lost quite some value against the US dollar. Certainly, profit-taking played a key role. However, portfolio investors were particularly interested in profit-taking due to rising political and social chaos across Indonesia.

Indonesia's economic growth in the second quarter of 2025 (Q2-2025) significantly exceeded our projection. While our projection was set in the range of 4.7-4.9 percent year-on-year (y/y), Indonesia’s Statistical Agency (BPS) reported on 5 August 2025 that the official growth rate was 5.12 percent (y/y) in Q2-2025.
In July 2025 we saw some more marked inflationary pressures in Indonesia. Based on the latest data released by Statistics Indonesia (or BPS), Indonesian inflation was recorded at 0.30 percent month-on-month (m/m) in July 2025. Key factors were (as usual) food prices and (a bit unusual) education that pushed inflation higher.
