Ever since the very start of the global COVID-19 crisis in early 2020, Indonesia has been recording a series of big trade surpluses each month. On the one hand, it is a welcome surprise as big monthly trade surpluses relieve pressures on Indonesia’s current account balance and rupiah exchange rate.
In recent times, almost each year can be labelled a ‘political year’ for Indonesia as a big number of elections – regional or central – need to be organized. On Sunday 15 November 2020, a total of 15 countries in the Asia-Pacific signed the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) in a digital meeting, thereby effectively establishing the world’s biggest trading bloc.
