  • Indonesia’s Jakarta Composite Index May Hit New Record on Jokowi Win

The benchmark stock index of Indonesia (Jakarta Composite Index, or IHSG) may reach a new record high level this week after market favourite Joko Widodo - popularly known as Jokowi - was officially announced the winner of the 2014 presidential election by the General Elections Commission (KPU) on Tuesday (22/07). Not unimportantly, the final decision was not accompanied by any riots or social unrest Jakarta or other parts of the Archipelago, thus giving investors some more peace of mind regarding the stability of Indonesian assets.

  • Global Markets Down on Geopolitical Tensions & Malaysia Airlines Crash

Geopolitical tensions between Israel and Palestine as well as the Malaysia Airlines Boeing that was shot down above eastern Ukraine territory yesterday (17/07) amid hostilities between Ukraine and pro-Russian separatists, have had a significant impact on global markets. Global stock indices have fallen, led by indices on Wall Street, while the US dollar and prices of gold and other precious metals appreciate as investors are in search of safe havens. The higher oil prices contribute to weaker emerging currencies.

Exports of China in August 2013 surpassed expectations and provides hope that the world's second largest economy is resuming its admirable growth. In July, China's exports had already recorded a 5.1 percent growth compared to the same month in 2012. On the other hand, imports in China grew slower than had been forecast at 7 percent (YoY). • Foreign Investors Push Indonesia’s Jakarta Composite Index Up

Although at the end of Wednesday’s trading day (11/06) Indonesia’s benchmark stock index (known as the Jakarta Composite Index or IHSG) was up, the index had been moving in the red zone during most of the day. Moreover, the index did not get support from the Indonesia rupiah exchange rate nor did it get support from Asian stock indices which tended to decline after yesterday’s weakening indices on Wall Street. Fortunately, foreign investors recorded net buying, thus contributing to the 0.52 percent growth of the IHSG to 4,971.95 points.

  • Jakarta Composite Index & Indonesian Rupiah Have a Bad Start on Monday

The Indonesian rupiah exchange rate continued to depreciate further on Monday’s trading day (26/05). Based on the Bloomberg Dollar Index, the currency of Indonesia had depreciated 0.17 percent to IDR 11,595 per US dollar by 1pm local Jakarta time. On Monday morning the US dollar was strengthening against most emerging currencies in Asia. Meanwhile, the central bank's benchmark rupiah rate (Jakarta Interbank Spot Dollar Rate, abbreviated JISDOR) depreciated 0.63 percent to IDR 11,633 against the US dollar.

  • Jakarta Composite Index: Euphoria on the Indonesian Stock Market

Investors' appetite for mining and plantation stocks managed to support the benchmark stock index of Indonesia (known as the Jakarta Composite Index or IHSG) on Thursday's trading day (22/05). After the recent decline of the IHSG, market participants continued to accumulate stocks that are considered cheap. Furthermore, indices on Wall Street on Wednesday were up and impacted positively on Asian indices on Thursday, thereby providing positive market sentiments for the IHSG.

  • Investors Prefer to Wait & See before Buying Indonesian Stocks

As I have mentioned before, Indonesia's benchmark stock index (better known as the Jakarta Composite Index or IHSG) runs the risk of declining amid a lack of domestic or external positive market sentiments. Despite the indices on Wall Street being up on the higher than expected markit services PMI as well as ISM-non manufacturing PMI, it was unable to uplift sentiments in Jakarta. Market participants seem to wait & see in the first week of May 2014, evidenced by the reduced trading volume and value of transactions.

  • Indonesia's Jakarta Composite Index Climbs 0.33% on Wednesday

We expected that Indonesia's Jakarta Composite Index (the country's benchmark stock index also known as IHSG) would continue to weaken on Wednesday's trading day (19/03) but net buying by foreign investors managed to push the index back into green territory. During the first two days of this week, the IHSG fell as euphoria over Joko Widodo's announcement to run for president in the 2014 elections faded. Last week, the market showed that they approve of Widodo as the IHSG climbed 3.23 percent on Friday (14/03).

  • Indonesia's Jakarta Composite Index (IHSG) Up 0.58% on Tuesday

Although we advise investors to remain careful as any negative sentiment will be used as a valid reason for profit taking, Indonesia's benchmark stock index (Jakarta Composite Index or IHSG) was up from the start of the trading day on Tuesday (11/03). The start of dividend payouts helped to offset concerns about possible interest rate hikes (in emerging markets) as well as the impact of weak indices on Wall Street and Europe on Monday (10/03). Asian stock indices, however, were positive on Tuesday, thus providing support for the IHSG.

  • Jakarta Composite Index Climbs 1.26% on Easing Tensions on Ukraine

Rising indices on Wall Street on Tuesday (04/03) impacted positively on Asian indices the following day, including Indonesia's benchmark stock index (known as the Jakarta Composite Index or IHSG). As the political tensions in Ukraine have somewhat eased since Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia was not seeking to escalate the conflict, investors were again eager to invest in emerging market stocks; foreign investors were net buyers. Today's performance of the IHSG left a gap at 4,602-4,621 points.

  • Despite Uncertain International Context Indonesia's Stock Index Climbs 0.37%

Although the gap on 4,575-4,579 was closed, Indonesia's benchmark stock index (Jakarta Composite Index or IHSG) was given limited room to go up further as the performance of global stock indices did not support a bigger rebound. On the contrary, despite the 0.37 percent rise of the IHSG to 4,601.28 points on Tuesday (04/03), there are still pressures that may push the index down in the days ahead. Amid the political conflict in the Ukraine, Wall Street fell on Monday (03/03), which led to profit taking in the first trading session.

  • Despite Less Rosy Sentiments, Jakarta Composite Index Remains Strong

Despite being - technically - overbought, the Jakarta Composite Index (Indonesia's benchmark stock index also known as the IHSG) continued its upward trend on Wednesday (19/02). Moreover, as market sentiments have turned less positive due to data from Europe and the USA (causing European and American indices to slow down) as well as a depreciating rupiah exchange rate, there was a sincere risk of a weakening IHSG today. However, contrary to our expectations, the IHSG rose 0.80 percent to 4,592.65 points.

  • Indonesia's Stock Index Down 0.10% But Rupiah Strengthens Sharply

The weakening Dow Jones Index on Wednesday (12/02) caused negative market sentiments in Asia the following day. Most Asian indices, including Indonesia's Jakarta Composite Index (IHSG), were down. Not even the announcement that Bank Indonesia decided to maintain its benchmark interest rate (BI rate) at 7.50 percent was able to push the IHSG back in the green zone. Investors probably already anticipated the central bank's decision as it was in line with the market's expectation.
