New Report: Repressed Frustrations in Indonesia – A Ticking Social Time Bomb
On 3 September 2025 Indonesia Investments released the August 2025 edition of its monthly report. The report discusses key political, economic and social developments that occurred in Indonesia in the month of August 2025.
What Do We Discuss in the Report?
The main theme in this August 2025 report is the demonstrations that mushroomed across the country in late-August 2025. While the direct causes were lawmakers' allowances and the death of an online motorcycle taxi driver (during the protest in Jakarta), it also exposed the underlying frustrations that have been simmering among the Indonesian population.
In the first article of the report we focus on those underlying frustrations, discussing matters such as poverty and income distribution inequality, while also the sheer size of the country makes matters complicated as it implies that there exists wide variety in cultures, religions, traditions and opinions. Meanwhile, logistics and supply chains become challenging in this huge archipelago, while coordination and cooperation between central and regional governments are tough.
Related to the first article, we also delve into the Immanuel Ebenezer corruption scandal that made headlines in August 2025. Allegedly, this (former) Deputy Minister of Manpower was engaged (together with colleagues) in extortion practices. Widespread corruption in the country's political top is also a sensitive matter, particularly when it involves people's and companies' tax money that ends up in corrupters' pockets.
As usual, we also take a look at the latest macroeconomic indicators of Indonesia to see how the economy is doing. This includes consumer confidence, retail sales, credit growth, car sales, motorcycle sales, foreign tourist arrivals and manufacturing activity.
Furthermore, we present an in-depth analysis of Indonesia's Q2-2025 GDP growth. There has been quite some criticism on the official Q2-2025 GDP growth figure as it was much higher (5.12 percent y/y) than expected, thus triggering some suspicion whether the official data are a correct representation of reality.
