  • Rising Earnings of Indonesian Firms in 2016, More Dividend in 2017?

    Improving corporate earnings of Indonesia's listed companies in full-year 2016 should mean shareholders can expect to receive more dividend payouts this year. Based on data from Kustodian Sentral Efek Indonesia (KSEI), so far this year 33 listed companies on the Indonesia Stock Exchange have announced their payout ratio. However, many more are expected to follow. Considering the generally improving financial reports, we expect more companies to distribute dividend in 2017 compared to last year's 248 listed companies.

  • Indonesian Rupiah Depreciates Further, No Positive Sentiments Yet

    The Indonesian rupiah continued to set a new record-low in the post Asian Financial Crisis era. Based on the Bloomberg Dollar Index, the rupiah depreciated 0.07 percent to IDR 13,290 per US dollar on Friday (05/06), the weakest level since 1998. A number of factors are responsible for this weak performance. These include higher bond yields, US dollar demand due to dividend repatriation and debt repayment, Indonesia’s high inflation, uncertainty about the Greek debt crisis and looming higher US interest rates.

  • Several Indonesian Companies Cut 2015 Dividend Pay-Outs

    A number of companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) have already announced their dividend pay-out ratios for 2015. Ten companies set the pay-out ratio for 2015 below the pay-out ratio in the preceding year. It is assumed that these firms cut back on dividend payments to shareholders in order to have more working capital and room for capital expenditure and investment as the Indonesian economy is expected to accelerate in 2016 with a GDP growth pace of 5.3 percent (y/y). Amid this improving macroeconomic context, these firms prefer to invest for further business expansion.

  • Indonesia's Jakarta Composite Index (IHSG) Up 0.58% on Tuesday

    Although we advise investors to remain careful as any negative sentiment will be used as a valid reason for profit taking, Indonesia's benchmark stock index (Jakarta Composite Index or IHSG) was up from the start of the trading day on Tuesday (11/03). The start of dividend payouts helped to offset concerns about possible interest rate hikes (in emerging markets) as well as the impact of weak indices on Wall Street and Europe on Monday (10/03). Asian stock indices, however, were positive on Tuesday, thus providing support for the IHSG.
