On 31 October 2021, Indonesian President Joko Widodo was handed a hammer by Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi. And it was a hammer and transaction with great symbolic value because it symbolized the transfer of the Group of Twenty (or G20) presidency from Italy to Indonesia.
It was well back during the ‘Oslo Climate and Forest Conference’, held in Norway on 26-27 May 2010, when Indonesia and Norway announced a partnership through which Norway would grant (the equivalent of) USD $1 billion in aid to Indonesia for forest preservation and climate control.
During his state visit to the USA, Indonesian President Joko Widodo told US President Barack Obama that Indonesia intends to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal. Currently, 12 countries have joined the TPP, including the USA and Japan, thus creating the world's largest free trade area (an area that covers about 40 percent of world trade). By many analysts the TPP is regarded a counterbalance to the big economic influence of China.
The pulp and paper industry in Indonesia is expected to expand five percent in 2015 on rising paper consumption in Asia and particularly in China, the world’s second-largest economy. Rising consumption will lead to an intensifying of global competition in the pulp and paper industry. Global pulp demand is forecast to rise 2.6 percent per year to 38.9 million tons by 2025 from 24.5 million tons in 2010. Over the same period, pulp demand in China is estimated to grow 6.4 percent per year to 14.3 million tons by 2025.

Energy is certainly the ‘thing’ to watch in the years, well decades, ahead. Amid heavy political pressures from the West, the world is heading for an unprecedented energy transition in which fossil fuels are going to be replaced by renewable energy sources. This is certainly great news for the environment (but whether the energy transition can ease, let alone stop, climate change – which is cited as the goal of this transition – seems iffy though).
In felt like a real déjà vu. Shortly before writing this introduction, the World Health Organization (WHO) said it added a new variant of concern to its list of COVID-19 mutations. This new variant, which is called Omicron (B.1.1.529), is believed to stem from South Africa or Botswana, and might be more contagious than the Delta variant that has been dominant over the past 12 months or so.
When writing this introduction, the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (also known as COP26) had just started in Glasgow (Scotland). Indonesian President Joko Widodo is among the delegates who is slated to speech about the importance of preventing – and adapting to – climate change, and to seek ways to obtain climate financing as Indonesia is unable to finance the huge and costly energy transition by itself.
Among the beautiful natural scenery that attracts numerous tourists in Indonesia are the tea plantations. The region around the Puncak pass in West Java is particularly known for its tea plantations. However, Indonesia's domestic tea production and exports are on the decline, while tea imports into Indonesia have been skyrocketing.
