While the electric vehicle (EV) is not a new invention but has a history that stretches back much further than most people realize (in fact even predating the gasoline car), this type of car experienced a revival in the late 20th century, driven by the growing awareness of the environment and costly fuel prices.
On Sunday (5 October 2025), Indonesia Investments released the September 2025 edition of its monthly report. In this edition we discuss a selection of economic, political and social topics that were relevant for Indonesia in September 2025.
Over the past years we have mentioned on several occasions that the electric vehicle is the automotive industry’s future thanks to three key inter-related circumstances: (1) recent rapid technological developments that allow the electric vehicle battery to be more energy efficient, (2) the world’s eagerness to move away from fossil fuels toward renewable energy, and (3) rising political support for the development of an efficient and conducive regulatory ecosystem for the electric vehicle industry.

The report zooms in on the key economic, political and social events that occurred in Indonesia in the month of December 2020. Special attention is given to Indonesia's 2020 regional elections, the latest cabinet reshuffle, and the electric vehicle.
Discussions about the regulatory framework - including incentives - for the electric car industry in Indonesia are ongoing. Hence, stakeholders in the country's automotive industry are eagerly awaiting for results of government discussions and a roadmap before investing in manufacturing facilities for the launch of electric cars on the Indonesian market.

Many – including Indonesia Investments – are convinced that the electric vehicle is the automotive industry’s future. And, when we take a look at the past two decades or so, we detect a significant acceleration in the development of the electric vehicle.
The automotive industry is among the hardest-hit industries amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis. In May 2020, when social and business restrictions were still very strict in places like Jakarta, car sales (wholesales; from the factories to the dealers) plunged 95.8 percent year-on-year (y/y) to 3,551 cars. Meanwhile, retail car sales dropped 96.1 percent (y/y) to 17,083 vehicles in May 2020. Never before had the Association of Indonesian Automotive Manufacturers (or Gaikindo) recorded such weak car sales figures.
