  • ECB's Negative Rates in the Eurozone Means Capital Inflows into Indonesia?

The central bank of Indonesia (Bank Indonesia) expects further monetary easing in the Eurozone to cause more capital inflows into emerging markets (including Indonesia). The European Central Bank (ECB) surprised financial markets last week by cutting interest rates to zero percent, expand its money printing program (quantitative easing) and reduce a key deposit rate further into negative territory (per 16 March 2016). These moves are done in an effort to revive the economy of the Eurozone and combat deflation.

  • Stock Market Update: Indonesia Climbs, Global Markets Down on Greece

Most stock indices across the world continued to fall on Friday (26/06) on heightened concern that debt-ridden Greece will fail to reach an agreement with its international creditors. The deal is necessary for Greece to obtain bailout funds in order to avoid a default on its debt to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) due on 30 June 2015. A default could mean a Greek exit (Grexit) from the Eurozone and jeopardizes stability of the whole financial system of the region. Talks between both sides will continue into the weekend.

Contrary to the positive performance of the benchmark stock index of Indonesia on Monday’s trading day (01/09) and despite positive domestic economic data released by Statistics Indonesia, the Indonesian rupiah exchange rate depreciated 0.22 percent to IDR 11,716 per US dollar based on the Bloomberg Dollar Index on Monday (01/09). The main reason for the currency’s depreciation is the strengthening US dollar as US economic data are improving and inflation is slowing in the Eurozone.

The Indonesian government is considering to stop exports of crude palm oil (CPO) to Europe from 2014 onwards as domestic CPO demand in Southeast Asia's largest economy is rising, brought on by the country's biofuel industry which is expected to grow 70 percent next year to 5 million tons. To curtail oil imports, the government stimulates the production of crude palm oil-based biofuel by raising the mandatory content of fatty acid methyl ester (which is made from palm oil) in biodiesel products from 7.5 percent to 10 percent.

Laju IHSG bukannya membaik, justru semakin anjlok. Tampaknya pelaku pasar, terutama asing, memanfaatkan rilis kenaikan BI rate tersebut untuk jor-joran melakukan aksi jual. Rilis kenaikan BI rate tersebut tampak menjadi pembenaran dilakukannya aksi jual besarbesaran tersebut.
