• Foreign Exchange Reserves at Bank Indonesia Rise to $110.5 Billion in July

    The central bank of Indonesia (Bank Indonesia) announced today (08/08) that the country’s foreign exchange reserves increased to USD $110.5 billion at the end of July 2014 (from USD $107.7 billion at the end of the previous month). Bank Indonesia said that the rising reserves were mainly due to receipts from the Euro bonds issued by the Indonesian government and foreign exchange earnings from oil and gas exports. In addition, buoyant foreign capital inflows also had a positive impact on the accumulation of the official reserve assets.

  • Indonesian Rupiah Exchange Rate: Volatile on Iraq and China Trade Surplus

    The Indonesian rupiah exchange rate strengthened slightly on the last trading day of the week. On Friday (08/08), Indonesia’s currency appreciated 0.15 percent to IDR 11,779 per US dollar according to the Bloomberg Dollar Index. Most Asian currencies and stocks fell, while prices of gold and oil jumped, after US President Barack Obama agreed to air strikes in northern Iraq (aimed at Sunni extremist militants). In combination with continued tensions in Ukraine as well as Gaza, investors opt for risk aversion (and profit taking).

  • Indonesia’s Non-Oil & Gas Manufacturing Industry Grows 5.49%

    Growth of Indonesia’s non-oil and gas manufacturing industry in the first half of 2014 reached 5.49 percent (year-on-year) and thus outpaced the country’s general economic growth of 5.17 percent (yoy) over the same period. Indonesia’s manufacturing industry growth was particularly supported by growth in a number of sectors: Food, Drinks and Tobacco (+9.62 percent), Wood and Other Forest Products (+6.35 percent), Transportation Equipment Industry and Machinery (+4.52 percent), and Other Industrial Products (+15.77 percent).

  • Education in Indonesia: World Bank Report on Teacher Reform in Indonesia

    A recent World Bank report focuses on the impact of the Teacher Law and its reforms, on teacher knowledge, skills, and motivations in Indonesia. The report also looks at student learning outcomes. In 2005, the Indonesian government had passed the Teacher Law in an effort to improve education in Southeast Asia’s largest economy, specifically by raising the quality of Indonesian teachers. Under the new law, teachers must complete a four-year college degree to obtain certification, and continue to improve their skills.
