    Growth of advertising spending in Indonesia's printed and electronic media grew 14 percent year-on-year (y/y) to IDR 134.8 trillion (approx. USD $10.1 billion) in 2016 from IDR 118 trillion in the preceding year. This growth pace is nearly double the annual growth pace that was recorded in 2014 and 2015 at 8 percent and 7 percent, respectively. These data come from a new report released by Nielsen’s Advertising Information Service earlier this week.

    Commission I of Indonesia's House of Representatives (DPR) plans to revise Law No. 32/2002 on Broadcasting by adding a full ban on the advertisement of tobacco-related products on television and radio. Indonesia's tobacco industry, a massive industry in Southeast Asia's largest economy, objects to this plan. This ban would also have a big affect on government revenue (excise duties on cigarettes are a key source of government revenue) as well as on revenue generated by media institution because tobacco companies are the fifth-largest advertiser in Indonesia.

  • Google & Indonesia Fail to Reach Tax Agreement in 2016

    US multinational technology company Google failed to reach a tax settlement with Indonesia's Tax Office in 2016 and therefore directors of Google Indonesia could risk a prison visit. In September 2016 Muhammad Hanif, Head of the Tax Office's Special Cases Department, said Google could face claims for five years of back taxes, including a bill of more than USD $418 million for full-year 2015 as the company is estimated to have paid less than 0.1 percent of the total income and value-added taxes it owed Indonesia in 2015. In Indonesia, Google generates income from online advertisement.

    RTB House, a Poland-based technology firm that develops solutions for personalized display advertising in more than 30 markets across the globe, expects online advertisement spending in Indonesia to reach USD $4.92 billion by 2019 (up 250 percent from estimated online advertisement expenditure in 2016).   • Tobacco Sales Banned for 24 Hours during World No Tobacco Day in Papua

    According to the Indonesian Ministry of Health, approximately one-third of Indonesians aged over ten years smoke (36 percent), with 67 percent of men and 4.5 percent of women smoking some form of tobacco. While Indonesia is the fifth-largest tobacco market in the world, it is the only World Health Organization (WHO) member state in Southeast Asia that has not ratified the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). The FCTC was developed in response to the globalisation of the tobacco industry and tobacco use.

  • Television Station ANTV Conducts IPO on the Indonesia Stock Exchange

    Indonesian television station Cakrawala Andalas Televisi (ANTV), owned by the controversial Bakrie Group, is conducting an initial public offering (IPO) on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX). Bookbuilding started today (28/02) and will continue up to 7 March 2014. Its listing on the IDX is planned for 27 March 2014. The company will offer 588.2 billion shares, 15 percent of its enlarged capital, to the public through this corporate action. Sinarmas Sekuritas has been appointed as underwriter of the IPO.

  • Indonesia Wants Google to Set Up Local Company & Pay Tax

    Indonesia's Communication and Information Ministry urges American multinational technology company Google to set up a permanent establishment in Indonesia. This way Google, which is owned by US multinational conglomerate Alphabet Inc, would need to start paying taxes to Indonesian authorities. Currently, Google only has a representative office in Indonesia, while transactions and revenue generated in Indonesia are booked at Google Inc's Asia Pacific headquarters located in Singapore.
