  • Will Donald Trump's Protectionist Policies Impact on Indonesia?

Frederic Neumann, Managing Director and Co-Head of Asian Economics Research at HSBC, says Indonesia is well positioned to feel limited impact only of US president-elect Donald Trump's (looming) protectionist policies as Indonesia's export performance contributes a mere 21.1 percent to the nation's gross domestic product (GDP). It is in fact domestic consumption that forms the backbone of the Indonesian macroeconomy, accounting for about 56 percent of GDP, and thus provides a buffer against global turmoil.

  • Analysis Indonesian Economy: What about Indonesia's Economy in 2017?

Although the economy of Indonesia will continue to face challenges in 2017, there are a couple of matters that give rise to optimism about accelerating economic growth. These were the conclusions drawn at the Entrepreneur Networking Forum that was held by Bank Tabungan Negara Pensiunan Nasional in Bandung (West Java) on Wednesday (14/09). Most Asian stocks are in the red zone on Monday (09/05) and Indonesia's benchmark Jakarta Composite Index is leading declines. • ADB Cuts Asia’s Economic Growth Outlook on Slowing Growth China & USA

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) announced that it cut its 2015 and 2016 economic growth forecasts for both China and other developing Asian countries due to the persistent economic slowdown in the world’s second-largest economy. China’s economic expansion is projected to reach 7 percent (y/y) in 2015 and 6.8 percent (y/y) in 2016. Both these outlooks were down 0.2 percentage point from the ADB’s previous projection. Due to the size of China’s economy, economic slowing will drag down growth in the whole Asian region.

  • Export Indonesia: Barack Obama Signs Generalized System of Preference

One of the reasons why Indonesia’s economic expansion has been slowing in recent years is weak export performance. Amid sluggish global economic growth, particularly slowing growth in China (one of the key trading partners of Indonesia), global demand for commodities and other products have declined. Indonesia, an important commodity exporter, immediately feels the impact of falling demand. However, Indonesian exports to the USA may rise after President Barack Obama signed new legislation related to US import tariffs.

Last week, I discussed the composition of the ten largest Indonesian companies by market capitalization. For this week's column I have decided to zoom in on the performance of Indonesia's main stock index (IHSG), which has been highly volatile in the last week. It seems like its trend for the upcoming short-term has changed from an upward into a sideward trend. While the Dow Jones Index has been setting new records, the IHSG is showing some signs of fatigue.

  • US Nonfarm Payrolls, China's Bird Flu and Korean Tension Weaken the IHSG

Reza Priyambada Indonesia Stock Exchange - Indonesia Investments

Last week Friday, American stock markets were not able to maintain a positive trend due to Nonfarm Payrolls that increased below expectation. Moreover, concerns about a spreading bird flu epidemic in China in combination with increased political tensions in Korea impacted on Monday's trading day (8 April 2013) of the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IHSG). The index had to absorb a sell-off, thus closing lower to 4,897.52, an 0.58 percent decline.

  • Have We Landed on a New Resistance Level?

After three days of trying to reach a new resistance level, the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IHSG) finally ended above the level of 4500. Actually, it does not mark a new phenomenon as the IHSG had reached 4518.95 at the start of the week. However, back then it could not hold that level for long due to selling pressures. Despite mostly negative Asian stock indices, the IHSG managed to gain in strength as European stock markets opened positively, and due to many promising results of Indonesian companies.
