  • FDI in Indonesia: Japan Remains Committed to Invest, says Kankeiren

Japanese companies remain committed to invest in Indonesia - particularly into infrastructure, power and manufacturing - according to the Kansai Economic Federation (Kankeiren), one of Japan's private, non-profit representative economic organizations. Kankeiren Chairman Shosuke Mouri met Indonesia's Chief Economics Minister Darmin Nasution on Monday (07/03) in Jakarta. Japan is one of the biggest investors in Indonesia. During the period 2010-2015 the country invested a combined total of USD $14.9 billion in Indonesia.

  • Japanese and Chinese Economic Data in the Spotlight

This morning various economic data were released in Asia, most importantly data from China and Japan. China posted a record USD $63.3 billion trade surplus in January 2016, while Japan saw its gross domestic product (GDP) contract more-than-expected at 1.4 percent (y/y) in the fourth quarter of 2015. However, despite weak GDP growth data Japanese stocks managed to surge, while Chinese stocks tumbled after the record monthly trade surplus. How is that possible? And what about Indonesian assets today?

  • Currency Indonesia: Why is the Rupiah Strengthening Markedly Today?

The Indonesian rupiah is appreciating markedly on Wednesday (10/02). By 12:30 pm local Jakarta time, Indonesia's currency had appreciated 1.62 percent to IDR 13,391 per US dollar based on the Bloomberg Dollar Index, a three-month high. Today, most emerging currencies in Asia are appreciating against the US dollar ahead of Fed Chair Janet Yellen's testimony in US Congress this week. Other factors that support strong rupiah appreciation are speculation that Indonesia will attract investors due to accelerating domestic economic growth and the move of Japan's central bank to introduce negative interest rates.

  • Indonesia Stock Market & Rupiah Update: Asia Extends Global Selloff

In line with the performance of the majority of stock markets in Asia, Indonesia's benchmark Jakarta Composite Index fell 0.63 percent to 4,768.62 points, while the Indonesian rupiah depreciated 0.11 percent to IDR 13,612 per US dollar (Bloomberg Dollar Index) on Tuesday (09/02). It was the first trading week for Indonesian assets after a public holiday (Chinese New Year) on Monday. Asian markets weakened today, led by Japan, due to the equities selloff that occurred in Europe and the USA overnight.

  • Panasonic & Toshiba Close Factories in Indonesia

Two major Japan-based electronics companies, Toshiba and Panasonic, have ceased all operational activities in their manufacturing plants in Indonesia. Toshiba has already closed its television manufacturing plant in Cikarang (West Java) and sold it to China-based Skyworth late last year. Reportedly, this was Toshiba's largest television manufacturing plant outside Japan. Meanwhile, Panasonic is to close its lighting manufacturing plants in Pasuruan (East Java) and Bekasi (West Java).

  • Indonesia Stock Market & Rupiah Update: China, Japan & Oil

Asian stocks were mixed on Monday (01/02). However, Indonesia's benchmark Jakarta Composite Index rose 0.21 percent to 4,624.63 points after a volatile trading day (one hour before trading closed, the index was down more than one percent). Furthermore, the Indonesian rupiah appreciated markedly, while there occurred inflows into bonds. It seems that Japan's surprise move to introduce negative interest rates managed to offset the negative impact of weak manufacturing activity in China and falling crude oil prices.

  • Global Selloff Continues on Low Crude Oil and China Turmoil

Asian stocks are again in deep red territory on Thursday (14/01), led by Chinese shares (which are on track to enter a bear market) as well as Japanese shares. It means that the rebound that had occurred earlier this week - caused by positive export data from China - was short-lived. The continued slide of oil prices (below USD $30 per barrel) and turmoil in China cause money to flow away from equity and fragile emerging market currencies.

  • Stock Market & Rupiah Update Indonesia: Mixed Opening on Monday Morning

Shares in the Asia-Pacific were mixed after opening on Monday (09/11). While, Japanese shares touched a fresh 2.5 month high on a weaker yen and Chinese shares went up (despite disappointing trade data), shares in Indonesia, South Korea and Australia were down. Indonesia's benchmark Jakarta Composite Index fell approximately 0.50 percent after opening on Monday, while the Indonesian rupiah had depreciated 0.83 percent to IDR 13,676 per US dollar by 09:16 am local Jakarta time.

  • Indonesian Stocks & Rupiah: Yellen's Remarks Put Pressure on Emerging Market Assets

Indonesian stocks and the rupiah are feeling the negative impact of news from the USA. Both Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen and New York Federal Reserve President William Dudley said a Fed Fund Rate hike in December is a "live possibility" amid low US employment, continued GDP growth and confidence that inflation will rise to the US central bank's target range. As a result of these remarks gold dropped to a one-month low, stocks declined, while bond yields and the US dollar were pushed higher.

  • Indonesia Stock Market & Rupiah Update: Bucking the Trend

Indonesia's benchmark stock index (Jakarta Composite Index) was one of the few Asian indices that bucked the trend on today's trading day (02/11). Whereas most Asian indices, led by Japanese shares, fell on concern about persistent manufacturing contraction in China, the Jakarta Composite Index managed to rise 0.22 percent to 4,464.96 points. Meanwhile, oil prices dropped and the US dollar extended losses against most emerging market currencies.

  • Stock Market Anomaly: Jakarta Composite Index Declines, but Why?

Stock Market Anomaly: Jakarta Composite Index Declines, but Why?

Contrary to most Asian stock indices which were positively influenced by Japan’s higher economic growth as well as rising indices on Wall Street last Friday (06/06), the benchmark stock index of Indonesia (known as the Jakarta Composite Index or IHSG) fell considerably on Monday (09/06). Not even the appreciating Indonesian rupiah exchange rate could push the index back into the green zone. At the end of Monday’s trading day, the Jakarta Composite Index declined 1.06 percent to 4,885.08 points.

  • Indonesian Stocks Up but Rupiah Continues Depreciation on Tuesday

Supported by enthousiastic foreign investors, the benchmark stock index of Indonesia (Jakarta Composite Index or also known as IHSG) managed to climb 0.61 percent to 4,942.16 points on Tuesday (03/06). Particularly consumer, trade and mining stocks were popular on today's trading day. It is interesting to note that this growth happened amid sharp rupiah depreciation as the currency still feels the negative impact of the USD $1.97 billion April 2014 trade deficit that was released yesterday (02/06).

  • Rupiah Down but Indonesian Stocks Overcome Weak Economic Data

Rupiah Down but Indonesian Stocks Overcome Weak Economic Data

Although initially the benchmark stock index of Indonesia (known as Jakarta Composite index or IHSG) fell after the market responded to today's release of Indonesia's April trade deficit and May inflation, the index ended in the green zone due to foreign net buying and general positive Asian indices (influenced by higher stock indices on Wall Street at the end of last week). Particularly Indonesia's big cap stocks in the miscellaneous industry and consumer sectors were popular as these were relatively cheap after having tumbled at the end of last week.

  • Jakarta Composite Index: Euphoria on the Indonesian Stock Market

Investors' appetite for mining and plantation stocks managed to support the benchmark stock index of Indonesia (known as the Jakarta Composite Index or IHSG) on Thursday's trading day (22/05). After the recent decline of the IHSG, market participants continued to accumulate stocks that are considered cheap. Furthermore, indices on Wall Street on Wednesday were up and impacted positively on Asian indices on Thursday, thereby providing positive market sentiments for the IHSG.

  • Indonesia Stock Market Update: IHSG Climbs 0.29% on Wednesday

Indonesia Stock Market Update: IHSG Climbs 0.29% on Wednesday

Although initially the benchmark stock index of Indonesia (known as the Jakarta Composite Index or IHSG) declined shortly after the opening on Wednesday (21/05), during the remainder of the day it went up. This is a trend which we often detect: after a sharp fall we see a rebound on the following day as investors want to take advantage of 'cheap' stocks. However, the rebound was only limited as investors prefer to wait and see for further market sentiments first. The main positive factor today were rising Asian stock indices.

  • Profit Taking after Long Rally Causes Indonesian Stocks to Decline 10%

After having recorded a five-day winning streak, Indonesia's benchmark stock index (known as the Jakarta Composite Index or IHSG) fell 0.10 percent to 4,892.29 points on Monday (21/04). The forming of a doji star and limited movement of the IHSG (due to reduced buying volume) implied that - without the publication of good news triggering positive market sentiments - the index would decline. Today's depreciation of the Indonesian rupiah exchange rate and mixed Asian indices were reasons for investors to engage in profit taking.

  • Benchmark Indonesia Stock Index and Rupiah Weaken on Thursday

During most of the day, Indonesia's benchmark stock index (the Jakarta Composite Index or IHSG) moved in the green zone, seemingly unaffected by falling indices on Wall Street on Wednesday (26/03). However, just before the trading day closed  market participants engaged in profit taking causing the 0.11 percent decline of the IHSG to 4,723.06 points. It is difficult to pinpoint the exact reason for this occurrence. Perhaps because Asian indices turned mixed after China's benchmark index fell as China's latest industrial profit growth data were weak.

  • Despite Less Rosy Sentiments, Jakarta Composite Index Remains Strong

Despite being - technically - overbought, the Jakarta Composite Index (Indonesia's benchmark stock index also known as the IHSG) continued its upward trend on Wednesday (19/02). Moreover, as market sentiments have turned less positive due to data from Europe and the USA (causing European and American indices to slow down) as well as a depreciating rupiah exchange rate, there was a sincere risk of a weakening IHSG today. However, contrary to our expectations, the IHSG rose 0.80 percent to 4,592.65 points.

Gain of Jakarta Composite Index Limited due to Mixed Sentiments

As we have explained before, a significant amount of market participants will engage in profit taking after a day (or in this case a number of days) of gain. Mixed sentiments originating from the Asian continent, particularly Japan and China, as well as the depreciating Indonesian rupiah exchange rate contributed to the slight gain of Indonesia's benchmark index (known as the Jakarta Composite Index or IHSG). The IHSG rose 0.02 percent to 4,556.19 points on Tuesday (18/02).

  • Jakarta Composite Index and Rupiah Continue Winning Streaks

The Jakarta Composite Index (Indonesia's benchmark stock index, also known as IHSG) continued its upward rally on Monday (17/02) even though it had concerned us that the index almost touched its 'overbought' level. Especially as the index posted limited gain by the end of last week, it made us unsure about its performance on Monday. And while there are several factors that caused positive market sentiments, we still warn for potential weakening of the index due to profit taking. On Monday (17/02), the IHSG rose 1.05% to 4,555.37 points.
