  • Manufacturing in Indonesia Contracted for the 10th Straight Month in July

    Manufacturing activity in Indonesia contracted for the 10th consecutive month in July 2015 as new orders declined. The Nikkei/Markit purchasing manager’s index (PMI), released on Monday (03/08), fell 0.5 points to 47.3 last month (from 47.8 in June), remaining below the level of 50 points that separates contraction from expansion. Due to deteriorating conditions in the country’s manufacturing sector, Indonesian factories shed jobs at the fastest pace since the survey started in 2011.

  • Indonesia's HSBC Purchasing Manager Index Hits Seven-Month Low in March

    Indonesia's HSBC purchasing manager index (PMI) hit a seven-month low at 50.1 in March 2014, down from 50.5 in the previous month. According to Indonesia's Finance Minister Chatib Basri, there is no need to revise government policy to combat the slowdown in the country's manufacturing sector as the government has deliberately slowed down the economy in order to curtail the wide current account deficit. The government of Indonesia aims to reduce the current account deficit to 2.5 percent of the country's GDP by the end of 2014.

    Indonesia’s HSBC Markit Purchasing Manager’s Index (PMI) showed a reading of 51.1 in April 2014, significantly up from 50.1 in the previous month, meaning that manufacturing activity in Indonesia has grown (a reading above 50.0 indicates expansion, while a reading below 50.0 indicates contraction). In fact, amid improved economic conditions as well as strong demand, manufacturing activity in Southeast Asia’s largest economy expanded at the fastest pace in 11 months.
