  • Indonesia's Increasing Significance for Toyota's Global Car Sales

    Indonesia remains an important sales market for Toyota, Japan's multinational corporation and one of the world's largest automobile manufacturers. In 2013, Toyota sold a total of 8.66 million cars worldwide, around 435 thousand of which were sold in Indonesia. The company which holds the exclusive right to sell Toyota units on the Indonesian market is Astra International, one of the largest diversified conglomerates in Indonesia. With a market share of 35 percent, Toyota is the dominant market leader in Indonesia's car sales market.

  • Indonesia's Preparations Start ASEAN Economic Community 78% Completed

    Economic Minister Hatta Rajasa said that Indonesia's preparations for the implementation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in late 2015 are currently for 78 percent completed. The AEC aims to enhance regional economic integration among the ASEAN member states. It will transform the ASEAN region into one with free movement of goods, services, investment, and skilled labour, as well as a freer flow of capital. Most important is to develop Indonesia's infrastructure in order to foster connectivity, thus reducing logistics costs.

  • Indonesia Tops Motorcycle Sales in ASEAN Region in 2013

    The Asean Automotive Federation (AAF) stated that motorcycle sales growth in the ASEAN region was recorded at 5 percent (year on year) in 2013. Motorcycle sales rose from 10.52 million units in 2012 to 11.09 million in 2013. It is interesting to note that motorcycle sales in Indonesia accounted for 70 percent of total motorcycle sales in the ASEAN region last year. Indonesian sales ammounted to 7.7 million units, followed by Thailand (2 million), Philippines (752,835), Malaysia (546,719) and Singapore (11,650).

  • Indonesia Rupiah Exchange Rate Continues Downward Spiral on Monday

    The Indonesia rupiah exchange rate continued its downward trend on Monday (23/12). Both Bank Indonesia's Jakarta Interbank Spot Dollar Rate (JISDOR) and Bloomberg's Dollar Index showed a depreciating rupiah. The JISDOR, which was launched by Bank Indonesia in May to manage exchange rate fluctuations, fell 0.01 percent to IDR 12,246 per US dollar, while the Bloomberg Dollar Index indicated a 0.29 percent decline of the rupiah to IDR 12,250 per US dollar at 14:10:09 afternoon, local Jakarta time.

  • Indonesia as ASEAN's Low Cost Green Car Production Base Meets Opposition

    With the development of a production hub for low cost green cars (LCGCs), Indonesia hopes to become the leading car producer within the group of ASEAN nations. Total car sales in ASEAN in 2012 surpassed the three million cars mark. The two largest contributors to these sales were Thailand (1.3 million sold cars) and Indonesia (1.1 million). Currently, Thailand is still the largest car production hub in the ASEAN region, both in terms of production rate and domestic sales (despite having only 60 million citizens to Indonesia's 240 million).

  • Indonesia Still the Second Largest Car Sales Market in the ASEAN Region

    Regarding car sales in the ASEAN region, Indonesia still trails behind Thailand according to recent data from the ASEAN Automotive Federation (AAF). In the first two months of 2013, Thailand's car sales increased 51.9 percent (YoY) to 255,727 car units, while Indonesia's car sales only increased 22.7 percentage points to 199,974 vehicles. Thailand controls about 43.5 percent of the ASEAN region's sales market. Indonesia comes in on second place with 34.0 percent market share.

  • IMF Optimistic About Economic Growth in the Asian Region

    The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has upgraded its forecast for this year's economic growth in the ASEAN-5 countries (which comprises Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam) from an initial 5.5 percent to 6.0 percent. Next year, however, the IMF revised down its forecast for the region from 5.7 percent to 5.5 percent. In 2012, ASEAN-5 had experienced 6.1 percent of economic growth, up from 4.5 percent the previous year.
