The value of export products originating from Indonesia's furniture and handicraft industry fell 16 percent year-on-year (y/y) to USD $1.6 billion in 2016 from USD $1.9 billion in the preceding year. The decline is attributed to the departure of several big furniture factories from Indonesia to Vietnam due to Indonesia's high logistics costs, higher minimum wages and Indonesian workers' low productivity. From 12 to 15 March, the Indonesia International Furniture Expo 2015 (IFEX 2015) will be held in the Jakarta International Expo, Jakarta’s largest exhibition venue. This year’s furniture expo is set to become the largest furniture expo ever organized in Indonesia, Southeast Asia’s largest economy. Around 470 companies, furniture manufacturers from all over Indonesia, will display their products (export-quality), including collections of furniture, furnishings and interior design items. Indonesian Trade Deputy Minister Bayu Krisnamurthi announced that Indonesian furniture, rubber and garment businesses have secured trade contracts worth USD $11.3 million with their counterparts in the USA and Canada. Most of these contracts (roughly USD 10.3 million) were sealed by US importers. Krisnamurthi stated that these deals show that international businesses have trust in Indonesian products. Moreover, the deals will have a positive impact on Indonesia’s troubled trade balance.

Investment in Indonesia's furniture and handicraft industries is expected to slow in 2016 due to subdued global demand and the lower competitiveness of these industries in Indonesia. Local furniture companies are moving away to Vietnam due to issues related to logistics costs, minimum wages and workers' productivity. For example, Taiwan-based Woodworth Wooden Industries Indonesia, the first Taiwanese furniture company that entered Indonesia (with a USD $40 million investment), decided to exit Indonesia, leaving 200 workers unemployed.
