  • Inflation Indonesia Update June: Consumer Price Index Up 0.54% m/m

    Indonesia’s inflation accelerated to 7.26 percent year-on-year (y/y) in June 2015 on higher food prices triggered by the start of the Ramadan month (the Islamic fasting month). The seasonal Ramadan and subsequent Idul Fitri celebrations always cause inflationary pressure in Indonesia as consumers increase spending. Despite Indonesian purchasing power having declined in recent months, reflected by slowing car and motorcycle sales, cheaper consumer goods such as food, clothes, shoes and bags are popular.

  • Unemployment in Indonesia Declines to 5.70% of the Total Labor Force

    On Monday (05/05), Statistics Indonesia announced that unemployment in Indonesia declined to 5.70 percent (of the total labor force) in February 2014, equivalent to 7.2 million people in absolute terms. Compared to August 2013 (when Indonesia's unemployment rate was 6.17 percent), this constitutes a marked improvement. However, growth was limited compared to February 2013 (when unemployment was 5.82 percent), Data on Indonesia's (un)employment are released twice per year, covering conditions in the months February and August.

  • Official Release: Indonesia's Economic Growth Slowed to 5.78% in 2013

    On Wednesday (05/02), Indonesia's official gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate for 2013 was released. According to Statistics Indonesia, Indonesia's economy expanded 5.78 percent in 2013, thus slowing - for the third consecutive year - from the 6.2 percentage growth in 2012 and 6.5 percentage growth in 2011. All sectors of the Indonesian economy posted growth in 2013: highest was the transport and communications sector (+10.2 percent) and lowest was mining and extracting (+1.3 percent).

  • January 2014 Inflation of Indonesia Higher than Expected at 1.07%

    Today (03/02), Statistics Indonesia released Indonesia's official inflation rate for January 2014. The monthly inflation rate accelerated to 1.07 percent, which is higher than most analysts had forecast. The main contributor to January's inflation were higher food products prices. Amid high rainfall and severe floods in several parts of Indonesia, disrupted logistics distribution impacted on these prices. The depreciating rupiah exchange rate is also a factor that makes retailers adjust their prices. Annual inflation rate eased from 8.38 percent to 8.22 percent.

  • Indonesia Records Trade Deficit of USD $657.2 Million in September 2013

    Indonesia's trade surplus in August 2013 was not continued into September. Today (01/11), Statistics Indonesia announced that the country experienced a trade deficit of USD $657.2 million in September 2013. Exports in September fell 6.85 percent year-on-year (yoy) to USD $14.81 billion, while imports rose 0.77 percent (yoy) to USD $15.47 billion. During January-September 2013, total exports amounted to USD $134.05 billion, while total imports amounted to USD $140.31 billion. This means that the current trade deficit stands at USD $6.26 billion.

  • Lower Foodstuffs and Clothes Prices; Indonesia's October Inflation 0.09%

    Inflation in October 2013 was recorded at 0.09%. This low inflation rate was mainly supported by easing food and clothes prices. The foodstuffs component in the basket recorded deflation of 0.34 percent, while clothes posted deflation of 0.56 percent. These details were presented by Suryamin, Head of Statistics Indonesia (BPS) on Friday (01/11). The 0.09 percent October inflation rate is low compared to past results in the same month with the notable exception of October 2011 when 0.12 percent of deflation was recorded.

  • Indonesia Records Deflation of 0.35% in September 2013

    Contrary to what most analysts expected, Indonesia experienced deflation of 0.35 percent in September 2013. The figure was released today (01/10) by Statistics Indonesia. Deflation was particularly triggered by easing food prices (including onions, peppers, beef, fresh fish and carrot) and lower tariffs for air and train transportation as well as inter-city transport fares. Previously, it was expected that Indonesia would record low inflation (less than 1 percent) in September. Year-on-year inflation eased to 8.40 percent (from 8.79 in August).

  • Unemployment in Indonesia Declines Steadily According to Latest BPS Data

    According to data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) that was published yesterday, Indonesia's unemployment rate has fallen to 5.92 percent in February 2013 from 6.14 percent in August 2012. BPS, a government agency, always takes the months February and August as bases to release its (un)employment figures. From August 2012 to February 2013 about 3.1 million Indonesians were added to Indonesia's labor force. This means that the country's current labor force numbers 121.2 million people (out a total population of 240 million).

  • Indonesia's GDP Slows Down to 6.02 Percent in Quarter 1 - 2013

    Today, Statistics Indonesia released Indonesia's economic growth figure for the first quarter of 2013. Compared to Q1-2012, Indonesia's gross domestic product (GDP) grew 6.02 percent. This growth was supported by almost every sector except for Mining and Extracting, which fell 0.43 percent (YoY), indicating that natural resources are still not back on track. The largest contributor to Indonesia's Q1-2013 growth is Transportation and Communication, which grew 9.98 percent.

  • Indonesia's March 2013 Inflation Rate Rises Mainly Due to Increased Food Prices

    Today, Statistics Indonesia (Badan Pusat Statistik, abbreviated BPS) released Indonesia's inflation figures for the month March 2013. According to Suryamin, head of BPS, the country's inflation last month reached the level of 0.63 percent, the highest March inflation level in five years. Particularly food prices drove the inflation rate upwards. Year-on-year inflation now stands at 5.90 percent, while year-to-date inflation (January-March) is 2.41 percent.

  • World Bank: Introducing Indonesia’s Revised Statistics Methodology

    In a World Bank blog, World Bank economist Alex Sienaert posted an update on the economy of Indonesia. After Statistics Indonesia (BPS) released the country’s latest GDP growth figures in early February, two important revisions regarding Indonesia’s GDP statistics have been made: (1) BPS has shifted the basis of the computation from the year 2000 to 2010, and (2) it adopted a significantly updated methodology and presentation of the statistics (updating national accounts from the 1993 System of National Accounts [SNA] to SNA 2008).
