While the 2024 general elections of Indonesia (involving both the presidential and legislative elections) are scheduled to be held on 14 February 2024, we expect to see a growing focus on these approaching elections throughout 2023. The reason is that campaigning will kick off before the end of 2023 (namely on 28 November 2023).
Those who closely follow Indonesian media should have noticed that there has been an increase in coverage of the approaching 2024 presidential election. This involves articles and analyses of the electability of certain political persons (including polls and surveys) but also articles that we consider (hidden) marketing.
On Thursday (27.06.2019) Indonesia's Constitutional Court read out its verdict on the subject of alleged election campaign violations in the 2019 presidential election that was held on 17 April 2019. Defeated presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto had filed the legal challenge as he felt the official results (which had been announced by Indonesia's General Elections Commission/KPU) were heavily influenced by widespread fraud and vote-buying.
In the early morning of Tuesday 21 May 2019, Indonesia's General Elections Commission (KPU) declared incumbent President Joko Widodo the winner of Indonesia's 2019 presidential election. Meanwhile, the KPU also stated that the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) secured most support among the Indonesian people.
Today, Wednesday 17 April 2019, the Indonesian people vote for the country's presidential and legislative elections. While the legislative elections are not less important, most eyes are set on the presidential election; a battle between incumbent President Joko Widodo and challenger Prabowo Subianto.
It could be a coincidence but there is a peak in high-profile corruption cases ahead of the 2019 elections. Indonesia Investments received information that presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto has selected Deputy Jakarta Governor Sandiaga Uno to become his vice-presidential candidate in the 2019 presidential election. Tensions within Indonesian parliament may have eased after the two opposing coalitions signed a limited power-sharing pact on Monday (17/11) after weeks of negotiations. This pact is expected to reinforce investor confidence in Indonesian politics amid improved political certainty. Previously, parliament was divided into two rival coalitions: the Awesome Indonesia Coalition (Koalisi Indonesia Hebat), which backs Indonesian President Joko Widodo, and the Red-White Coalition (Koalisi Merah-Putih), which is led by Prabowo Subianto.

Recently, the revision of Law No. 34 of Year 2004 on the Indonesian National Armed Forces (Tentara Nasional Indonesia, or TNI) that was passed by Indonesia’s House of Representatives (DPR) in a plenary session on 20 March 2025 became a hot topic in Indonesian media.
On 24 February 2025, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto was joined by two former Indonesian presidents (Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Joko Widodo) when he launched Danantara, Indonesia’s new sovereign wealth fund. Likely, the presence of two former presidents served to underline the historic significance of this launch as well as underscoring broad-based political support for the move.
When Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto made his first speech as president on 20 October 2024, he stated that Indonesia seeks a “free and active non-aligned path. We don’t want to join any military pacts, [instead] we choose a friendly path with all countries.”

And so, someone else will be behind the country’s political and economic steering wheel.
There is quite some controversial material to discuss after the Constitutional Court of Indonesia (Mahkamah Konstitusi, or MK) paved the way for incumbent President Joko Widodo’s eldest son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka (henceforth Gibran), to team up with Gerindra Chairman Prabowo Subianto in the presidential race.
We plan to give an update on Indonesia’s 2024 legislative and presidential elections each quarter because these elections are quite important for the future of Indonesia. As is widely known, incumbent President Joko Widodo cannot join this 2024 race because of the two-term limit, and so – after one decade in office – Indonesia will have a new president in 2024.
