Indonesia is known as the world's largest archipelago. However, local authorities do not exactly know how many islands Indonesia actually has. Back in 1996 the central government made a rough estimate of 17,500. However, rising concerns about illegal fishery and radical Islam as well as growth of protectionism (the battle for natural resources) has made the Indonesian government eager to turn the rough estimate into precise knowledge. However, this will not be an easy undertaking.

Susi Pudjiastuti, Indonesia's Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, informed that still not all fishery products that are captured in Indonesian seas and waters are reported to the government. For example, in 2015 only 6 million tons of captured fish were reported to authorities, while it is estimated that production in fact reached 7.4 million tons, implying a 18 percent difference between "legal" and "illegal" fisheries production in Indonesia. In fact, Indonesia's Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry believes the figure is much higher.

Diplomatic relations between Indonesia and China face another challenge as reports suggest that the Indonesian navy fired at an illegal Chinese fishing boat near the Natuna Islands in the South China Sea on Saturday (18/06). According to Chinese sources the incident injured one Chinese fisherman, while Indonesian sources claim there had been no injuries. The waters in the South China Sea are claimed by China, while Indonesia considers these waters part of its exclusive economic zone.

Due to the Indonesian government's push to develop the nation's maritime sector, the initial public offering (IPO) of Dua Putra Utama Makmur, an Indonesian integrated fishery, marine product processing and cold storage company, was oversubscribed 1.5 times. I Made Satyaguna, Head of Investor Relations at Dua Putra Utama Makmur, said the company's target of raising IDR 921 billion (approx. USD $67 million) through the IPO has been achieved. More than 90 percent of investors are pension funds.

The recently exposed case that involves illegal fishery, abuse and even alleged slavery on and near the remote island of Benjina (East Indonesia) has taken another turn after a key witness in the case was found dead in a hotel in Central Jakarta over the weekend. Yoseph Sairlela, adviser at Indonesia’s Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry, was beaten to death according to local media. Indonesia's National Police stated that it suspects the murder is related to the ‘Benjina-case’. The ministry requested police protection for other key witnesses.

The Indonesian government and the Netherlands-based Wageningen University and Research Center will cooperate in a new bilateral fisheries and aquaculture project. This project, called 'Project for Fisheries and Aquaculture for Food Security in Indonesia' aims to enhance food security and reduce malnutrition in Indonesia through increasing the availability of various fish products on Indonesia's domestic market. The Netherlands and Indonesia together contribute 9 million euro to finance the project.

Indonesian Minister of Maritime and Fisheries Susi Pudjiastuti said Indonesia could raise the (illegal) fishing dispute between Indonesia and China - that occurred near the Natuna Islands in the South China Sea over the weekend - at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea if China's authorities fail to respect Indonesia’s sovereignty over its sea territory. Last Saturday (19/03) a Chinese ship (Kway Fey 10078) was spotted fishing illegally within Indonesia's Exclusive Economic Zone in the South China Sea. Its crew was arrested and ship confiscated. However, two armed Chinese coast guard ships arrived to intervene.

Shares of newly-listed Dua Putra Utama Makmur soared on Tuesday (08/12) at its debut on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX). Shares of the fish processing firm, the 15th company to be welcomed on the IDX in 2015, climbed 50 percent to finish at IDR 825 per share. Dua Putra Utama Makmur offered 40 percent (1.67 billion new shares) of its total equity at a price of IDR 550 per share, hence raising IDR 918.5 billion (approx. USD $67 million).
