    Five automotive brands from Japan controlled car sales in Indonesia in the first half of 2017 with a dominating (combined) market share of about 90 percent. Based on data from the Indonesian Automotive Industry Association (Gaikindo), Toyota, Daihatsu, Honda, Mitsubishi and Suzuki accounted for about 90 percent of total car sales in Indonesia during the January-June 2017 period. In total, 533,903 car units were sold in this six-month period.

    Domestic sales of low-cost green cars (LCGCs) in Indonesia may exceed the level of 200,000 units in 2015, a 14 percentage point growth from an estimated 175,000 sold LCGC units this year. Amid slowing domestic car sales (a consequence of the country’s slowing economic growth and tighter monetary policy), popularity of the recently introduced LCGC has managed to support total car sales in Southeast Asia’s largest economy. In the first ten months of 2014, a total of 1.04 million cars were sold, up 1.72 percent from the same period last year.

    Car sales in Indonesia fell 17 percent (month-on-month) in July 2014 to 91 thousand vehicles, while motorcycle sales plunged 28 percent to 539,171 over the same period. The main reason for this sharp decline is the limited number of working days in July due to the Lebaran holiday (also known as Idul Fitri and which marks the end of the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan). As a consequence of this public holiday, production of cars and motorcycles declined, and less cars and motorcycles could be distributed to Indonesian dealers (wholesalers).

    Gaikindo: Ahead of Lebaran, Indonesian Car Sales Grow 13% in June 2014

    According to data from the Indonesian Automotive Industry Association (Gaikindo), domestic car sales in Indonesia rose 13 percent to 109,706 car units in June 2014 from the previous month (97,147 vehicles) as people increased car purchases ahead of the Idul Fitri (Lebaran) festivities, which commence after the holy fasting month of Ramadan has ended on 28 July. Idul Fitri involves the exodus of millions of Indonesians from the cities to their places of origin. Ahead of this celebration, car sales always increase.

    Car sales in Indonesia grew 8.2 percent (year-on-year) to 111,767 vehicles in February 2014 according to the latest data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Manufacturers (Gaikindo). As usual, car sales were dominated by Toyota, Daihatsu (both are distributed by Astra International, one of Indonesia's largest diversified conglomerates), Mitsubishi, Suzuki and Honda. February sales were supported by the popular low-cost green car (LCGC) that was introduced on Indonesia's market in 2013.

    Car Sales, Production and Exports of Indonesia Estimated to Grow in 2014

    Indonesia's national car industry is expected to contribute IDR 44 trillion (USD $4 billion) to the country's total exports in 2014 through the export of completely built units (CBU), completely knock down units (CKU) and automotive spare parts. Exports of CBUs are estimated to rise more than 18 percent to 200,000 units in 2014, supported by increased domestic production capacity, according to Budi Darmadi, an official at Indonesia's Ministry of Industry. Darmadi declined to estimate exports of CKUs and spare parts this year.

    Astra International, one of the largest diversified conglomerates and the dominating force in Indonesia's automobile industry, sold 268,072 cars in the first five months of 2013. Total car units sold in the same period stands at 497,670, which implies that Astra has a market share of 54 percent. Sales in January-May 2013 grew 8.47 percent compared to the same period in 2012. Astra's motorcycles sales grew 11.6 percent to 1,974,274 units. As such, Astra, which sells the Honda brand, has a 60 percent market share in Indonesia's motorcycle industry.

    Indonesian car sales in Q1-2013 rose 17.8 percent to 295,465 units from 250,830 units in the same quarter last year. Astra International, one of the biggest conglomerates in Indonesia and the dominating force in Indonesia's automotive industry, had to hand in a couple of percentage points in terms of market share in domestic car sales. In Q1-2013, Astra controlled 52.3 percent of Indonesia's car sales, down from 58 percent in Q1-2012.
