    Exports of Indonesian Motorcycles Remain Strong in February 2018

    Also in the second month of 2018 exports of Indonesian motorcycles were strong. Based on data from the Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association (AISI), the country's motorcycle exports surged 37.2 percent year-on-year (y/y) to 76,700 units in the first two months of 2018 combined. It could mean that 2018 will become another great year for motorcycle exporters. Last year, exports of two-wheelers from Indonesia surged 52 percent (y/y), outpacing stakeholders' forecasts of 30-40 percent (y/y).

    Based on the latest data from the Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association (AISI), motorcycle sales in Indonesia rose 1.8 percent year-on-year (y/y) to 482,537 units in the first month of 2018.     Not only Indonesia's domestic motorcycle sales rose in May 2017. Also exports of motorcycles from Indonesia grew rapidly in May. Based on the latest data from the Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association (AISI), motorcycle exports from Indonesia rose 33.7 percent year-on-year (y/y) to 31,631 units in May. This growth was attributed to exporters' successful efforts to enlarge export markets (including adding new markets).

    Indonesian motorcycle exports have grown by a whopping 87 percent year-on-year (y/y) to 27,066 units in February 2016 from 14,433 units in the same month one year earlier. Sigit Kumala, Chairman of the commercial department of the Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association (AISI), said this solid performance occurred on the back of the market expansion strategy applied by Indonesian motorcycle manufacturers. He added that Indonesia's export performance (in terms of motorcycle sales) has been improving since the second half of 2016.

    The national automotive industry of Indonesia recorded export growth of 10.4 percent in the first quarter of 2014 (year-on-year). Statistics Indonesia said that exports in the automotive industry (which includes automobiles and motorcycles) were worth USD $1.27 billion in the first three months of the year, compared to USD $1.15 billion in the same period in 2013. However, the automotive industry of Indonesia only contributes 3.49 percent to the country's total non-oil & gas exports.

    Indonesia Targets 50% Increase in Motorcycle Exports in 2016

    The Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association (AISI) says Indonesia's motorcycle exports should rise by 50 percent (y/y) to around 342,000 units in 2016. Gunadi Sindhuwinata, General Chairman of the AISI, stated that Indonesia's motorcycle exports have been impressive so far this year, rising 76 percent (y/y) to 97,778 units in the January-April 2016 period. This impressive export performance is supported by the choice of several global motorcycle manufacturers to make Indonesia their production hub for specific motorcycles.
