Each year – under normal circumstances – millions of domestic and international tourists visit Yogyakarta and the adjacent Central Java Province to enjoy the region’s historic remnants (most notably the Borobudur and Prambanan temple complex), to do some shopping in the famous Malioboro Street in the city center of Yogyakarta, or to see arts and performances. Having a new and world-class airport available, it is now expected by local authorities that tourism in the region can blossom further, thereby empowering the region’s economy.

In his speech, Widodo said he now regards YIA as “the best airport in Indonesia”. He further emphasized that construction of YIA was completed remarkably fast. It only took 20 months to construct the first phase. Widodo therefore praised the fruits of the cooperation between state-owned airport operator Angkasa Pura I and publicly-listed (yet state-controlled) construction company Pembangunan Perumahan (PP).

Construction of the airport started in September 2018, with the first phase being completed in March 2020. However, YIA was actually already being used from May 2019 (for 13 domestic flight routes that were served by Lion Air, Garuda Indonesia, Citilink Indonesia, Batik Air, and – a bit later – Indonesia Air Asia). Hence, the soft opening was in March 2020.

YIA is one of Indonesia’s National Strategic Projects. Projects that receive this status can rely on the backing of all relevant government ministries and institutions (both at the central government level and the regional level). Presidential Instruction No. 1/2016 on the Acceleration of the Implementation of the National Strategic Projects made it mandatory for all government institutions to support these projects.
