    After having experienced overall weakening corporate earnings in 2015, Indonesia's largest companies saw rising net profit in full-year 2016 (in line with Indonesia's accelerating macroeconomic expansion last year). Of the ten biggest Indonesian companies (biggest in terms of largest market capitalization on the Indonesia Stock Exchange) only cigarette manufacturer Gudang Garam is yet to release its full-year 2016 financial results. The combined results of the other nine showed a marked improvement from the situation one year earlier.

  • Heavy Equipment Market in Indonesia Burdened by Low Commodity Prices

    The production of heavy equipment in Indonesia in the first half of 2014 fell by 25 percent (year-on-year) to 2,292 units. The decline in production is due to the still weak state of the mining and construction sectors in Southeast Asia’s largest economy. Main reasons being the implementation of the mineral ore export ban in January 2014 and low commodity prices, for example coal. Limited construction projects have been undertaken in the first half of 2014 as investors wanted to wait for the results of Indonesia’s legislative and presidential elections first.

  • Indonesian Stocks: Investor33 Index Outperforms Jakarta Composite Index

    The recently launched Investor33 Index has outperformed both the benchmark stock index of Indonesia (Jakarta Composite Index or IHSG), which contains all stocks that are listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange, and the LQ45 Index, a stock index which contains 45 Indonesian listed companies that fulfil certain criteria. In the first six months of 2014, the Investor33 Index climbed 16.36 percent, whereas the IHSG increased 14.14 percent and the LQ45 Index 15.68 percent.

    Beritasatu Media Holdings in cooperation with the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) officially launched its Index Investor33 on Friday (21/03). This index consists of 33 listed companies at the IDX that share strong fundamentals, assessed through both technical and fundamental analyses. According to Hoesen, Director of Corporate Valuation at the IDX, the 33 companies have influenced the performance of the Jakarta Composite Index (Indonesia's benchmark stock index) considerably in recent years.

  • Weak Mining Sector: Production of Heavy Equipment in Indonesia Fell 30%

    In 2013, domestic production of heavy equipment in Indonesia fell 30 percent to 6,127 units from the previous year as commodity prices (such as crude palm oil and coal) were still down. This made Indonesian miners reluctant to ramp up production figures, thus having less need to purchase heavy equipment. According to Pratjojo Dewo, Chairman of the Indonesian Heavy Equipment Association (Hinabi), demand for heavy equipment in Indonesia started falling at the end of 2012 and continued into 2013.

    Sales of United Tractors, the largest distributor of heavy equipment in Indonesia and part of the Astra Group, continue to climb in 2017. In fact, the management of United Tractors now expects full-year 2017 sales to exceed their initial forecast. Sara Loebis, Corporate Secretary of United Tractors, said the company has therefore raised its forecast for full-year heavy equipment unit sales from 3,000 to 3,200 units.

    Although at the end of Wednesday’s trading day (11/06) Indonesia’s benchmark stock index (known as the Jakarta Composite Index or IHSG) was up, the index had been moving in the red zone during most of the day. Moreover, the index did not get support from the Indonesia rupiah exchange rate nor did it get support from Asian stock indices which tended to decline after yesterday’s weakening indices on Wall Street. Fortunately, foreign investors recorded net buying, thus contributing to the 0.52 percent growth of the IHSG to 4,971.95 points.

  • Indonesia's Main Index Reaches Beyond Next Psychological Boundary

    The upward movement of American and European stock indices on Tuesday (28/05) made a good impact on Indonesia's main index (IHSG) on Wednesday (29/05). Despite Asian markets being mixed and the Hang Seng Index (usually the reference point for Asian indices) falling, the IHSG succeeded in surpassing the next psychological boundary at 5,200 points. Overall, foreign investors recorded a net sell but it was offset by a net buy in a number of big caps: Perusahaan Gas Negara, Jasa Marga, Indo Tambangraya Megah and United Tractors.
