  • Indonesian Banks Reject Lower Net Interest Margin Plan

    Indonesian banks support the country's financial authorities' intention to cut lending rates to single digit margins (in a bid to boost credit growth and economic activity). However, these banks argue that lower interest rates should be the result of enhanced efficiency at banks, not by the Financial Services Authority (OJK)'s plan to cut banks' net interest margin (NIM). Earlier this year, the OJK - the government agency that regulates and supervises Indonesia's financial services sector - announced its plan to push state-owned banks' NIM down to the range of 3 to 4 percent.

  • Financial Services Authority (OJK) Releases Sustainable Finance Roadmap

    Indonesia's Financial Services Authority (OJK), the government agency that regulates and supervises the financial services sector of Indonesia, released a roadmap for the development of the sustainable finance sector, both for the middle-long period (2015-2019) and the long-term period (2015-2024). OJK Chairman Muliaman Hadad explained that these roadmaps, made in cooperation with the Ministry of Forestry and Environment, contain guidelines and directions for the development of sustainable finance in Indonesia.

  • Mutual Fund Managers in Indonesia to Include Foreign Assets Soon

    Indonesian investment fund managers may be allowed to include foreign assets in their mutual funds (conventional and Islamic-based mutual funds), offered to investors, soon. Indonesia’s Financial Services Authority (Otoritas Jasa Keuangan, abbreviated OJK) is currently formulating new regulations - expected to be finalized by June 2015 - that would allow to include foreign assets in an attempt to reduce risks by diversifying mutual fund portfolios. Indonesian investment managers had been requesting for this new regulation.

  • Indonesia Introduces Benchmark INDOBEX Bond Indices

    Indonesia’s Financial Services Authority (OJK) in cooperation with the Indonesian Bond Pricing Agency (IBPA) and the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) has launched a bond index on Friday (21/11) involving government and corporate bonds that should function as a reference for the pricing and performance. This new index is called the INDOBEX and is divided into three types of indices: INDOBEX Composite, INDOBEX Government and INDOBEX Corporate. Each index has a total return, clean price, gross price, effective yield and gross yield index.

  • Foreign Banks in Indonesia Post Large Profit on Rupiah Depreciation

    According to data from the Financial Services Authority (OJK), foreign banks operating in Indonesia have posted great profit growth in the January to May 2014 period. Combined, these foreign banks have recorded a 94.36 percentage point growth (year-on-year) in profit to IDR 3.79 trillion (USD $323.9 million) in the first five months of this year. The reason behind this jump in profit is the sharply depreciated rupiah exchange rate. Over the course of 2013, the rupiah fell over 25 percent against the US dollar.

  • Indonesian Furniture Manufacturer Chitose Internasional Prepares an IPO

    Chitose Internasional, an Indonesian furniture manufacturer intends to release 30 percent of its enlarged capital through an initial public offering (IPO) on the Indonesia Stock Exchange in June 2014. Currently, the company is trying to obtain approval from the Financial Services Authority (OJK) in order to conduct the IPO. President Director of Chitose Internasional Dedie Suherlan said that the proceeds will be used for the construction of a new factory, which will produce wood-based furniture products. This factory should become operational in 2015.

  • OJK: 7 New IPOs Expected on Indonesia Stock Exchange in First Half 2014

    Indonesia’s Financial Services Authority (OJK) announced that it is studying the requests of seven Indonesian companies to conduct an initial public offering (IPO) on the Indonesia Stock Exchange in the first semester (January-June) of 2014. If the OJK grants permission to these requests, it means that 17 companies will have conducted an IPO on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) in the first half of 2014. In total, 30 new company listings are expected on the IDX in 2014.

  • More Room for Foreign Investment in Indonesia's Insurance Sector

    Following the enactment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015, the Financial Services Authority (OJK) will allow foreign insurance corporations to open a branch office in Indonesia. The AEC will transform the ASEAN region into a region with free movement of goods, services, investment, skilled labour, as well as a freer flow of capital. Currently, foreign insurance corporations are prohibited from opening a branch in Indonesia unless it is in the form of a joint venture company with a 80 percent foreign ownership limit.

  • OJK: Credit Growth in Indonesia's Banking Sector at a Safe Level

    Credit growth in Indonesia's banking sector in 2014 is estimated to range between 17 and 18 percent. This estimation is higher than the central bank's target of 15 to 17 percent but lower than credit growth in 2013. According to Indonesia's Financial Services Authority (Otoritas Jasa Keuangan, OJK), this pace of growth is at a safe level. Third party funds are projected to grow 16 to 16.5 percent, while the OJK did not provide an estimation of the loan to deposit ratio (LDR) yet although it did say that the LDR was at a safe level too.

    Bank Indonesia (the central bank of Indonesia) and the Financial Services Authority (OJK) signed an agreement (the ASEAN Banking Integration Framework, abbreviated ABIF) with Malaysia’s central bank to support banking integration in the ASEAN region. The website of Bank Indonesia states that ABIF “provides an operating framework for ASEAN member states to implement principles and the integration process in the banking sector to support the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) [which is to be implemented later this year]”.

  • Five Indonesian Insurance Companies Declared Insolvent by OJK

    The Financial Services Authority (Otoritas Jasa Keuangan, OJK) of Indonesia announced that it has declared five Indonesian insurance companies insolvent as they do not meet capital requirements. OJK official Dumoly Freddy Pardede said that Bakrie Life, Asuransi Jiwa Tugu Mandiri and MAA General Assurance are three of the five insolvent companies. He refrained from mentioning the names of the other two insurance companies. The OJK will continue to monitor the five companies and force them to meet all capital requirements.

  • Regulation and Supervision on Banking Sector Transferred to the OJK

    Today (31/12), the central bank of Indonesia (Bank Indonesia) officially transfers its authority to regulate and supervise the banking sector to the Financial Services Authority (Otoritas Jasa Keuangan, abbreviated OJK). Muliaman D. Hadad, Chairman of the Board of the OJK, said that all functions, duties as well as powers of regulation and banking supervision, licensing, inspection, investigation and consumer protection have been transferred to the 35 (regional) offices of the OJK.

  • Agreement Bank Indonesia and the Indonesian Financial Services Authority

    Today (18/10), the Governor of Bank Indonesia and the Chairman of the Indonesian Financial Services Authority (OJK) signed an agreement concerning “cooperation and coordination to support task implementation at Bank Indonesia and OJK”. The agreement forms a basis for expediting and optimising coordination between both organisations in terms of their function, task and authority in light of the upcoming transfer of the banking regulation and supervision function from Bank Indonesia to OJK on 31 December 2013.
