Indonesian Transportation Minister Ignatius Jonan inaugurated the new coal terminal, owned by state-controlled coal miner Tambang Batubara Bukit Asam (Bukit Asam), in Tarahan (South Sumatra) on Wednesday (10/06). The Tarahan coal terminal, which required USD $152 million in investment, has now become Indonesia’s largest commercial terminal having the ability to accommodate ships with a maximum capacity of 210,000 dead-weight tonnage (DWT). This maximum capacity of the terminal is scheduled to be enlarged to 240,000 DWT.

Inefficiencies at the Tanjung Priok port, Indonesia's main port (located in the heart of Jakarta) and which handles about two-thirds of the country's international trade, are a major cause for logistics costs in the domestic economy. Indonesia's logistics costs account for about 24 percent of GDP, thus significantly higher compared to its regional peers. The long dwell time at Tanjung Priok is one of the largest concerns, particularly as trade flows continue to grow. The average import container dwell time increased from 4.8 days in 2010 to 6.4 days in 2013.
Indonesia Investments has updated the financial highlights of state-controlled enterprise Adhi Karya (ADHI). The company is engaged in construction services, infrastructure development, property, real estate and engineering, and procurement & construction. Its infrastructure projects include roads, bridges, irrigation, power plants and ports, while its building projects include high rise buildings, hotels, hospitals and schools. Shares and net income of the company have surged in 2012 amid Indonesia's booming property sector.
PT Pelabuhan Indonesia II (Indonesia Port Corporation in English but most widely known as Pelindo II), the state-owned enterprise that is involved in port and harbour services in ten Indonesian provinces, will choose its partner for the construction of terminal II and terminal III of the New Priok Port project from a selection of 12 companies. These companies can either opt to join the tender for the construction of one terminal, or, for both terminals together. At the end of the year, the winners of the tenders will be announced.
Royal HaskoningDHV, a Netherlands-based international project management and engineering consultancy services provider, has won the contract to supervise the construction of the extension of the main port of Jakarta, Tanjung Priok. The contract is part of the New Kalibaru Terminal Development. The first phase includes the development of a new 4.5 million TEUs container terminal which aims to enhance the economic development of Indonesia and will bring Indonesia's port facilities on par with other world-class ports.
PSA International (the Port of Singapore Authority) is one of the participants in the tender - organized by PT Pelindo II - for the construction of terminal two and three of the Kalibaru New Priok harbour in North Jakarta. According to the Director of Pelindo II, RJ Lino, there are 18 participants in the tender, of which the winner will probably be announced in September 2013. Companies can either opt to join the tender for the construction of both terminals, or, one of the two terminals.

The strike, organized by more than 600 workers of Jakarta International Container Terminal (JICT) at Jakarta's Tanjung Priok port, seemingly had a limited negative impact on trade. The strike took place from Thursday (03/08) to Monday (07/08) and was used by the workers to urge the transfer of bonus payments. JICT, which operates the container terminal at Tanjung Priok, is owned by Hong Kong-based Hutchison Port Holding Group (51 percent) and Koperasi Pegawai Maritim (48.9 percent). The latter is part of state-owned port operator Pelindo II.
Government-led infrastructure development is regarded by most analysts and policymakers as the key to overcome Indonesia’s slowing economic growth as infrastructure development will cause a multiplier effect in the economy (triggering growth in other industries such as cement and property while job availability grows accordingly). In the second quarter of 2015, Indonesia’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth slowed to 4.67 percent (y/y), a six-year low.
