    The big Indonesian banks that are listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) have seen their shares surge so far in 2017. Moreover, their share performance is expected to retain this momentum in the second half of 2017. Among the big banks Bank Danamon Indonesia is leading the race.   • Bank Central Asia Now Largest Company on Indonesia Stock Exchange

    Bank Central Asia (BCA) is now the the biggest company in terms of market capitalization on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX). At the end of trading on Tuesday (09/05) the company's market cap stood at IDR 443.8 trillion (approx. USD $33.4 billion), replacing cigarette manufacturer HM Sampoerna with its market cap at IDR 440.8 trillion. BCA, part of the Djarum Group, is the second-largest bank in Indonesia in terms of assets.

    After having experienced overall weakening corporate earnings in 2015, Indonesia's largest companies saw rising net profit in full-year 2016 (in line with Indonesia's accelerating macroeconomic expansion last year). Of the ten biggest Indonesian companies (biggest in terms of largest market capitalization on the Indonesia Stock Exchange) only cigarette manufacturer Gudang Garam is yet to release its full-year 2016 financial results. The combined results of the other nine showed a marked improvement from the situation one year earlier.

  • Operational Costs Major Indonesian Banks Rise in 2016

    Even though Indonesia's Financial Services Authority (OJK) has been eager to encourage local banks to raise efficiency, banks' ratio of operating expenses to operating income (ROEOI) has in fact risen. For example, the ROEOI of Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) rose 406 basis points from 68.04 percent in March 2015 to 72.10 percent in March 2016. BRI's Finance Director Haru Koesmahargyo said the bank's higher ROEOI is caused by the bank's rising non-performing loan (NPL) ratio. In Q1-2016 BRI's NPL ratio rose 20 basis points to 2.22 percent.

    Bank Central Asia (BCA), one of the leading commercial banks in Indonesia, is estimated to continue posting growing net profit and rising credit growth in the years ahead despite the persistently sluggish domestic economy.     The Indonesian rupiah touched a 17-year low as the currency continued to depreciate amid persistent bullish US dollar momentum. The rupiah weakened to IDR 13,539 per US dollar according to the Bloomberg Dollar Index on Friday (31/07).     The benchmark stock index of Indonesia (Jakarta Composite Index, abbreviated IHSG) declined 0.92 percent to 5,136.86 points on the last trading day of the week.
